A concrete bridge supported with natural fibers: Construction using concrete reinforced with renewable materials

Tomorrow’s building material is here today. Textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) is durable, formable in diverse shapes and suitable for lightweight construction. As the name suggests, conventional TRC is reinforced with carbon or glass-fiber fabrics rather than steel. A research team at the Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research, Wilhelm-Klauditz-Institut WKI is now replacing these fabrics with eco-friendly natural fibers. These alternatives rival conventional concrete’s performance, but leave a smaller carbon footprint, and cost less to make. Researchers will present a prototype of a natural fiber-reinforced concrete bridge at the BAU 2019 trade fair in Munich on January 14 to 19, 2019.

A novel approach to recycling construction waste

The construction industry is one of the most resource-intensive sectors of the German economy. The nation’s buildings constitute a vast store of raw materials, harboring some 100 billion metric tons of materials that could be recovered and returned to the material cycle at the end of their service life. Four Fraunhofer Institutes have joined forces in the BauCycle project to kick-start recycling of sand and gravel fine particle fractions that cannot be reclaimed today for reuse in further construction projects. The research team will present the results of their work at the 2019 BAU trade fair in Munich from January 14 to 19. The showcase at booth 528 in hall C2 will feature aerated concrete blocks made of recycled rubble, acoustical building materials, and components made of mineral granulates.

Acoustic-Lightboard® - Sound absorption of the "light" kind

For a long time, glass, stone and steel have been the preferred materials of modern architecture. These hard materials with their closed surfaces have a major disadvantage. They reflect all kinds of sounds and thus increase the noise level in interior rooms which is generally felt to be unpleasant and disturbing. With regard to pleasing acoustics in offices as well as smaller and larger halls, additional solutions for sound absorption have to be found.
