BEST OF ARCHITECTURE 2024: Callwey

On October 30, 2024, over 400 industry experts, architects and interior designers, planners and manufacturers gathered at the Design Offices München Macherei for the Best of Architecture Summit. The summit brought together the leading minds of the architecture world for a day of discussions, presentations and networking, providing a platform to talk about the future of building, new technologies and design trends. The highlight of the day was the award ceremony for the best projects and the winners of the prestigious architecture awards.

Houses of the year—the best single-family homes 2024

Interpol is not just a house; it is a harmonious symbiosis of history, innovation and urban quality of life. The project has its roots in an in-depth analysis of the surroundings, the architectural challenges and the existing stock. Milla Architekten have not just converted an existing building, but rather continued and reinterpreted a story.

The now prestigious Callwey competition “Houses of the Year” was held for the 14th time and is one of the most important awards in the industry. In 2024, the jury once again honored projects that innovatively design living space with their architecture and thus create unique homes.

Everything is included: size is not a selection criterion! Whether made of concrete or wood, elevated or with a basement, as a bungalow or with four storeys, on a slope, by a lake, in the city or in the forest.
The selected Houses of the Year differ not only in their dimensions, but also in their material, shape and location. The winner—Milla Architekten from Karlsruhe with their project “Juwel im Hinterhof”—is also dedicated to the building task of the time: dealing with and building on existing buildings.
In addition, six commendations and a photo prize will be awarded to projects from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The Callwey publication of the same name presents the 50 best single-family homes by architects selected by the expert jury.
In addition, the best award-winning Architects' Choice product solutions impress with their innovation, design and sustainability.

Residential buildings of the year 2024—diversity and climate protection in housing construction

Given that housing is already scarce and becoming increasingly expensive, it is clear that the demand for affordable housing in particular will continue to rise in the future. This no longer only applies to rapidly growing cities, but also to rural regions. Here and there, it is important to develop intelligent strategies for housing construction that take equal account of urban planning, ecological, economic and social aspects.

For the fifth time, the jury awarded the prize “Residential Building of the Year” in 14 categories: Experimental Approach, Subsidized Housing, Multigenerational Living, Innovative Façade, Rural Area, Mixed Use, Modular Housing, Sustainable Energy Concept, Densification, Participatory Planning, Premium Living, Neighbourhood Development, Revitalization and Residential High-Rise.

Building housing also means building cities”, says the website of the winning office. The jury was convinced by the fact that this office is able to combine both standards in an outstanding way.

AADA ATELIER FOR ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN AND ATMOSPHERE wins Best of Interior 2024

The highlight of the jury meeting? The intense debate about the award winners. Each juror brings expertise and their own perspective to the table.

Once again this year, the submissions for Best of Interior 2024 were as diverse as they were impressive and yet had one thing in common: they were evidence of high-quality, but also bold interior designs.
The jury had the challenging task of selecting the 50 most impressive and inspiring interiors. Once again this year, the choice was not easy, but unanimous.
The duo Olivia Sommer and David Gössler, the creative minds behind the “AADA ATELIER FOR ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN AND ATMOSPHERE” office, were particularly convincing this year. The project impressed the jury with its sensitive design and ingenious implementation, which skillfully responds to the challenges of our time without raising a moral finger. The conversion of a vacation home in Switzerland from 1968 is an impressive interpretation of the existing building and its inspiring design demonstrates the power of interior design to tell stories and evoke emotions. This was the jury's verdict.

Among all the projects shown in the book, one first prize and five commendations as well as seven awards for the Newcomer Products of the Year in the “Architects' Choice” category were chosen; in addition, a photography prize was also awarded for the third time.
